CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PAYMENT CENTER
Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Birmingham

Project Overview: Convert an existing single story building adjacent to the main offices into a new customer service and payment center. The 20,000 square foot former warehouse features a large bank-style lobby with 6 teller stations and 3 customer service stations. The facility will also house the customer service department, call center, field service, security and meter reader areas.
Structural Engineering Services: KHAFRA designed the retrofit roof sub-framing system layout used to transform the existing flat roof structure to a hip roof. The company also designed a guard house and canopy adjacent to the renovated building.
PARKER HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM
Birmingham, AL
Project Overview: The project consisted of a new gymnasium with basketball court and administrative support areas, totaling approximately 25,000 square feet of floor coverage.
Structural Engineering Services: KHAFRA was responsible for the design of the structural system, to include foundations, structural wall systems, floor systems, and roof framing as required to support gravity, wind and earthquake loads imposed on the building.
SELAITE MEHIRET KIDEST MARIAM CHURCH
Decatur, GA
Project Overview: KHAFRA provided engineering design services to the Atlanta Ethiopian Christian congregation for a new church in Decatur, Georgia. This sanctuary and worship center will provide 43,000 square feet of worship space and seating for 500 people. A life center, which will be attached to the sanctuary with a covered breezeway, will provide 15,000 square feet of space. Paved parking will be provided and the grounds will be landscaped to maximize greenspace.
Structural Engineering Services: KHAFRA's responsibilities included designing the church’s structural system, which consists of structural steel lateral and longitudinal moment frames supported by spread footing foundations. The building structure was designed using a slab on grade, pre-cast insulated panels, brick veneer in some areas, light gauge metal framing, and a metal deck roof system supported by steel open web joists. KHAFRA used RAMSteel and RAMFrame to assist with the structural analysis and design of the church complex.
WHITE RIVER NORTH GROUNDWATER TREATMENT PLANT
Carmel, IN
Project Overview: Construct a 12-million gallon per day (MGD) groundwater treatment plant that performs the oxidation and adsorptive filtration of iron and manganese from the raw water supply to Indianapolis Water's quality standards.
Structural Engineering Services: KHAFRA was responsible for the structural design of several buildings including the purification building, aeration/detention structure, SWTP control structure, and the effluent structure. These buildings ranged in design from concrete structures to combination structures involving concrete, masonry, pre-cast roof panels, and aluminum grating.
SHADES MOUNTAIN FILTER PLANT BULK LIQUID SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE FACILITIES

Project Overview: This project involves the expansion of the Shades Mountain Filter Plant Bulk Liquid Sodium Hypochlorite facility to accommodate new development in the Birmingham metropolitan area. KHAFRA was selected as the architectural and structural consultants to design (a) a new dock adjacent to the existing acid recirculation system and (b) a new structure adjacent to the existing SHC building.
Structural Engineering Services: KHAFRA is responsible for the structural design of this multilevel facility. The dock consists of a slab on grade with pipe trenches, surrounded by handrails and covered by a canopy. The structural design minimizes the amount of concrete and reinforcing needed for supporting heavy equipment loads. The new SHC building will be connected to the existing structure and will be covered by a pre-engineered wood truss framed roof system that spans over both buildings.
CITY OF COLUMBIA METRO WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

Project Overview: The Columbia Metro Wastewater Treatment Plant project consists of a number of tasks, including assisting with architectural and structural design narratives and preliminary as well as final design drawings.
Structural Engineering Services: KHAFRA is providing structural design services at the Metro WWTP for the new Blower Building in the Treatment Train #1 area. This project has several phases. KHAFRA will provide detailed construction drawing and specifications for the preliminary and final design phases. Structural Engineering services will also be provided for the bidding, construction and warranty phases. At the conclusion of each task, KHAFRA's Structural Engineering Team will provide a complete set of design notes which will include: design calculations, sketches, catalog cuts, manufacturer’s information, memos, letters, meeting minutes, telephone logs, and other pertinent engineering information.
THE LOUISVILLE SOUTHERN INDIANA OHIO RIVER BRIDGES KENNEDY INTERCHANGE
Louisville, KY
Project Overview: KHAFRA is currently providing engineering design services for The Louisville Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Kennedy Interchange project which consists of the reconfiguration of I-71, I-64, and I-65 bridge interchange (spaghetti junction). The project includes refurbishing and constructing 73 bridges and 33 retaining walls and several infrastructures upgrades, including street widening and resurfacing. The project team consists of over twenty consultants.
Structural Engineering Services: KHAFRA will provide structural design and cost estimating services for three bridges and four retaining walls. Tasks include completing advance situation survey folders for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Highways during the preliminary design phase. KHAFRA is responsible for the entire scope of the project, from design through the final construction document phase.
